Thêta aims for world record with ten-day rowing marathon

Starting February 11, student rowing association Thêta will embark on a ten-day rowing marathon on a rowing machine at Eindhoven Centraal train station, aiming to break the world record for ‘continuous rowing on an ergometer in a large team.’ The current record is held by St Peter’s College Boat Club of the University of Oxford.

The initiative marks Thêta’s 50th anniversary and aims to raise funds for the Dutch Heart Foundation in memory of former rower Claudia van Lieshout, who passed away from cardiac arrest in her sleep. More than 150 Thêta members will take part in the record attempt, which is supported by NS, providing the location and security personnel.

Olympian Sander de Graaf will kick off the challenge, which starts on February 11 at 1:00 PM and is set to end on February 21 at 8:00 PM. Founded in 1975, Thêta is one of TU/e’s largest student sports associations, with almost five hundreds members competing at both recreational and elite levels. De Graaf won a silver medal with the Holland Eight at the Olympic Games.

According to Thêta chair Ymke Tolboom, the record attempt highlights the club’s ambition while supporting the Heart Foundation in the fight against cardiovascular diseases. TU/e Executive Board President Robert-Jan Smits adds that sports are essential for students’ physical and mental well-being.

The world record attempt will be streamed live on YouTube from February 11 at 1:00 PM.
