Start refurbishment Hoofdgebouw unsure

It will only be at the end of the year that the Executive Board will announce when in 2014 they'll decide on a start date for the Hoofdgebouw refurbishment. Eventually, the Departments of Industrial Design and Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences, and eight services are to be housed in the building. The renovation will include major stripping, after which it will be refurbished and fitted with a brand new façade.

The Traverse building, currently home to most of the support services, will be disposed of. Right now, the exact costs for the refurbishment are yet unknown. The bottle neck in determining a start date is a strict condition coming from the Supervisory Board: no more than fourteen percent of the total budget for a year can be used for accommodation. Due to an increase of accommodation costs and rent, and a drop in total profits the housing ratio exceeded that norm and reached 14.4 percent already by late June. The Executive Board will take steps to make sure the housing ratio drops below the fourteen-percent norm, but they still have to include the costs for the Hoofdgebouw refurbishment. According to Executive Board chairman Arno Peels, the board is currently weighing their options.

Peels: “The easiest thing would be to cancel the refurbishment project, but there’s no way around the fact we have to tackle the current housing situation. On top of that, accommodation and facilities have become ever more important to students choosing a university. We could also try and raise the total revenue of TU/e, so the housing costs become less significant relatively. But considering the times that will prove tough. A third option is moving the refurbishment to a later date.”
