And how are things in Stockholm?
After being with my Swedish boyfriend for three years, the BMT-minor was a perfect opportunity to live in beautiful (but cold) Sweden for a while. I had been to Sweden many times before and in Stockholm it was love at first sight. Therefore I was very happy to spend a semester at the Royal Institute of Technology (Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan) in Stockholm on Erasmus-exchange.
Now the first period has passed and I just started a six week project in the biotechnology lab. I really enjoy being there, and the gym that all employees in the lab can use for free only makes it better! The courses that I’m taking are very interesting and the campus, which is located in central
Stockholm, is beautiful. One thing I had to get used to was the long travel time to the university. Even though it’s only a few kilometers away, it takes me an hour by public transport to get there. When I started biking here the first time, it soon became clear that Sweden is not nearly as flat as Holland..
Over the past few months I have eaten a lot of Swedish meatballs, seen many red wooden houses and even a moose! I am really enjoying myself in Sweden, but there are some drawbacks as well. First of all it gets dark at 15.30 now, and it will be 14.45 in December. I am not very excited about a winter with meters of snow and temperatures far below zero.. Also, student life is definitely a bit different when you easily pay 6 to 10 euros for an alcoholic drink in a bar. However, in my opinion the friendly Swedes and gorgeous Stockholm definitely make up for all of that!
