One of the most important points is that up until now an integral TU/e vision or strategy about sustainability has been invisible or nonexistent. Though reassured that this document and approach would be coming, we hope to see a document in line with the ambitions of the university.

In order for this strategy to be successful, it is necessary to ensure that this approach and strategy involves everyone and everything on the campus: concerning students and staff, and going from the cleanrooms in Spectrum to the coffee machines in the canteens.

Of course the complexity of some of the issues and solutions is beyond the scope of this column and most of the lowest hanging fruit has already being handled. For example, the Sustainable Operations Action Plan 2018-2021 aims amongst other things to reduce garbage by forty percent and increase the share of sustainable foods to sixty percent.

Yet more could be done: as it stands, our university is not even in the new global university ranking of Times Higher Education that aims to measure institutions’ success in delivering the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, while the Vrij Universiteit Amsterdam occupies the 16^th place. If one of the most innovative campuses in one of the most innovative places on earth does not put this issue at the heart and centre of our university and of our own campus, how can it be expected that the rest of the world will follow suit?
