Eindhoven gives students national energy allowance
The municipality of Eindhoven decided on October 21 to make the national 1,300 euros of energy allowance available to students with an independent living accommodation. Students have until the end of the year to submit their applications to the municipality.
Following the ruling of the district court Gelderland, which states that it is unlawful to exclude all students from the energy allowance, the municipality was forced to reconsider this regulation for students. Since students can suffer the same impact of rising energy prices as other independent households, the municipality decided to make the national energy allowance available to students between 18 and 27 years old, under certain conditions.
These conditions are: independent living accommodation, an energy contract under a student’s own name or proof of energy payment via rental or service costs, and an income of no higher than 120 percent of the social minimum. Students can submit their applications via www.eindhoven.nl/energietoeslag.
Students who do not qualify for the allowance but who nevertheless run into financial trouble due to rising energy prices, can apply for an individual specific allowance.
