University Rebellion protests with art object
Action group University Rebellion is protesting in the Auditorium – not their preferred location, but one that does give them the opportunity to interact with visitors – on Wednesday. UR created a two-sided panel on which you can see a dystopian future on one side and their adaptation of the story of Shell and Exxon Mobil, which are represented at the Career Expo today, on the other.
Master’s student in Computer Science Eduardo Costa Martins created a work of art that aims to draw attention to the opinion of University Rebellion (UR). They and fellow demonstrators put together a large screen. “I call this side (see photo, ed.) Dystopian Alley. You see the future if we don’t stop using fossil fuels. But the newspaper reports that we stuck onto it show that it’s not merely the future, but also a reality already.”
Costa Martins calls the other side of the screen Career Exposed. “These posters tell the honest story. We already used them in previous campaigns. It denounces the greenwashing that Shell and Exxon Mobil use.” Greenwashing is pretending to be more sustainable than a company or organization actually is.

The intention was to put the screen right in front of the booths of the aforementioned companies in the Senaatszaal. “This would mean visitors who want to talk to Shell first have to pass our posters, and after the conversation – when they turn around – get to see the miserable alley. But unfortunately we’re banned from entering the Senaatszaal. Which I actually think goes against our right to protest.” The screen is now on the Voorhof.
TU/e security is closely observing what’s happening. “As it is now, we’re fine with it. Last year there was too much noise from the megaphones and it was very disruptive. Now UR is doing itself a favor.” Yesterday, UR protested with flags in front of the Thales booth in the Senaatszaal, together with EindhovenStudents4Palestine.
Costa Martins also sees the power of the artwork compared to flags and megaphones. “It makes it easier to strike up a conversation with visitors.”
As far as the security department is concerned, UR can go on protesting like this all day.
