Police investigates hack and connection to DDOS attacks
The police is currently investigating the hack of the TU/e network on January 12, as well as whether there’s a connection between the cyberattack and the DDOS attacks on the SURF network. The university will also have its own approach analyzed by an external partner and expects to share the results in April.
Specialists with the police Cybercrime team are investigating the hack of the TU/e systems, confirms a police spokesperson. The investigation focuses primarily on tracking down the suspects. The police doesn’t want to release any details beyond this.
The police is also investigating whether there is a connection with the DDOS attacks on the Surf network around the same time. This is standard procedure, the police say. Whether there’s actually a connection ‘will have to be confirmed by further investigation’, the spokesperson communicated in writing. The DDOS attacks caused the network to become overloaded for several days at universities of applied sciences and hospitals, such as Fontys and the Máxima Medical Center.
The university is also conducting its own forensic investigation in cooperation with the company Fox-IT, which specializes in cybersecurity, reads the latest update on the TU/e website. In addition, the university will have its own approach to the cyberattack analyzed by an external party. The results aren’t expected to be available until April at the earliest. “There are undoubtedly things we can improve,” Vice-President Patrick Groothuis said about the matter in an interview. “We want to share those lessons both internally and externally.”
