And how are things in Sydney?
Thaomy Tran is on the other side of the world this winter for an internship at the University of Sydney. Trading the cold Dutch winter for the Australian summer was a no-brainer to her. “Celebrating Christmas on the beach where Santa swaps his sleigh for a surfboard in 30-degree weather? Yes, please! Sun, beaches, science, and no worries!”
A month ago, I started my 6-month internship at the University of Sydney (USYD) as the final step for my master's degree in Medical Engineering. The atmosphere at USYD is incredibly warm and welcoming. I have amazing colleagues here; everyone comes from different cultures with unique insights, leading to endless interesting conversations. I feel very much at home. The work culture is very relaxed. In the lab, we enjoy long, fun lunch breaks, often spending two hours in local cafés and restaurants. Parties with the lab team are the best, I've even had a party at the Prof's place!
Living in Sydney is expensive. Groceries and gym memberships are pricier compared to back home - I pay about 45 dollars per week for the gym. Now you might think, per week? Yes, because here everything is paid weekly. And the rent? I pay about 400 dollars per week (but I do have my own bathroom), while I still have travel 45 min. to my internship. But this is common for a city like Sydney. Luckily, public transportation here is much cheaper than in the Netherlands, and my internship allowance is also paid weekly.
Additionally, alcohol here is much more expensive than in the Netherlands - a crate of beer is about 50 dollars.
Sydney is famous for its iconic Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Besides, Sydney has beautiful nature for hiking, not just in Sydney but throughout Australia. During the Christmas holidays, I explored more of Australia and went for a trip to New Caledonia and Vanuatu. These countries are incredibly close to Sydney, and it was AWESOME! Moreover, the fireworks show in Sydney on NYE was not to be missed!!
