Intro 2024 | 57.000 steps and 50 beers
The Intro is like an Olympic event: people from all over the world come together for a week to break records. From taking thousands of steps to downing beers. On Thursday afternoon, Cursor spoke with first-year students Rolf, Timo, and Lars and asked them to describe their Intro experience using some key numbers.
Rolf (first-year Mechanical Engineering, on the left in the main photo) and Timo (student of Applied Physics & Science Education, in the middle) know each other from high school. During the Intro, they ran into each other again. Lars is in the same Intro group as Timo, also studying physics. Since they met, the trio has often hung out together. With Cursor, the students shared some numbers that illustrate how they experienced the intro week.
How many steps have you taken so far?
Timo pulls out his phone to get the exact numbers: "Monday and Tuesday were both 20,000 steps, yesterday 12,000, and today so far 5,000."
"For me, it's about the same,” confirms Rolf after he also checked his phone’s step tracker app.
Lars doesn’t even bother checking: “We walked together, so it’s probably about the same.”
How many new people have you met?
Lars and Timo are in the same Intro group and therefore share the same experience: “We now know everyone in our Intro group, which is 12 people. Plus, we met about 5 others while going out.”
“I met more,” Rolf chimes in. “I also joined some dinners in the evenings, each time at a different student house, so I’ve met at least 30 new people.”
How many beers have you drunk?
Timo doesn't need to think about it: “Zero, because I’m not eighteen yet.”
Lars admits that he did drink, even though he’s also not 18+: “Two beers, but that was just because of a bet - I really don’t like it.”
Rolf has to do a bit of mental math before answering honestly: “I think around 30. But today is ‘Thirsty Thursday,’ so it might end up being 50 beers total.” “Wow,” his friends respond in unison, apparently impressed by this achievement.
What grade would you give this Intro?
Rolf enthusiastically jumps in: “I think the Intro is really fun, so I’d give it a 9. The pub crawl yesterday was my favorite part.”
Lars is slightly less impressed: “I’d give it a lower grade, maybe an 8.5. Monday and Tuesday were particularly exhausting, with all the walking and listening.”
Timo also has some critical feedback despite his high rating: “I’d give it an 8. It was often a bit chaotic. The Intro parents often didn’t know exactly what was supposed to happen, so we felt like we knew just as much as they did. That could be improved.”
How much energy do you have on a scale from 1 to 10?
Timo lets out a tired sigh: “It all takes a lot of energy. So many impressions and new people, getting up early in the morning and going to bed late at night. I’m really, really tired, so I’d give it a 1.”
Lars nods in agreement: “I also had a party all weekend, so it’s just been a lot these past few days.” His energy level fails to get a passing grade. “I’d say a 5.”
Rolf, on the other hand, still has plenty of energy left. “I’d say a 6. It’s exhausting, but I’m a hardcore carnival-goer, so I’m used to it, and this is totally my thing.”
