Fontys takes measures against alcohol abuse on TU/e campus

Fontys University of Applied Sciences is taking a series of measures in response to the alcohol consumption by new students during their exploration of the campus. Fontys is going to tighten its internal monitoring of alcohol consumption and impose financial measures on study association Innovum of Fontys Engineering. In addition, the canoe trip has been canceled.

Yesterday, it became apparent that during Fontys’ Intro week, also known as Purple, Fontys Engineering Intro attendees were consuming alcohol before the agreed-upon time. On the first day, many students were already drinking beer on Hubble’s terrace around lunchtime. This was during their exploration of the campus where they will be studying this coming academic year, specifically the Nexus building.

Measures

Two clear rules concerning alcohol are stated on the Purple website: “1. No alcohol is served, passed on, or provided to minors. This is punishable by law.  2. No alcohol is served at activities before 4:00 PM, nor may it be consumed or passed on.”

Wim Pleunis, Fontys board spokesperson, states that this matter is being taken very seriously. “We do want to emphasize that in general, the introduction week goes smoothly and that the agreements are very well adhered to.”

Pleunis lists the measures taken by Fontys Engineering on Tuesday morning to prevent a recurrence. Firstly, the Tuesday afternoon canoe trip has been canceled. Secondly, the institution calls on its staff to be more strict in enforcing the rules regarding alcohol consumption. And finally, student association Innovum will be penalized financially. The details of this are still unclear.
