And how are things in Munich?
Servus! Going on exchange to our neighbours in the East may not seem as challenging as going to a country farther away, but this is not the case. Munich is a vibrant city with a rich culture, beer festivals and nature. There is always something to do or an activity to participate in in the city, whether it is relaxing by the river Isar or in the English Garden, and it is not always about drinking beer.
I chose TUM (Technische Universität München) because the university has a good reputation, and Munich is a fun student city. Here, I am studying at the Faculty of Management & Technology in the direction of leadership and strategy in digitization.
Early April, I participated in the introduction program Party Animals organized by ESN TUMi (the orientation and support program for international students), where we were in 8 different teams with 200 students. The program had a lot of diverse activities and even included an overnight stay in the Alps. During the intro week, I met many people from different countries within and outside of Europe. They study at different faculties, but we still have overlapping courses coincidentally. This is lots of fun, and we also study together a lot.
Munich is close to the Alps, so there are all kinds of beautiful hiking trails. I enjoy hiking and exploring nature. I also like to go to beer festivals, which confirm the stereotypical image of Germany, with litres of beer and meters of currywurst. However, I enjoy the beer festivals, and the sung songs create a great atmosphere. With my friends, we often go there in traditional dress.
Finally, I want to mention that if you are interested in an exchange in Munich, the semesters here run differently. For example, the summer semester runs from April to September and the winter semester from October to March. This provides many opportunities for hiking and skiing in the winter. Also, registering for courses works differently than in the Netherlands because you sign up for about ten courses before the semester starts. Only shortly before the start of the semester you will be informed about the times and locations, and will hear if you are accepted into the course. So, it may be that you are not admitted to specific courses.
