Low turnout in TU/e elections
The results of the TU/e elections for the U-raad, faculty councils and service council are in. Turnout was low at 26 per cent (students) and 32 per cent (employees). The election resulted in some shifts within the Uraad. For the service council, there were as many candidates as seats, so everyone was elected as a member.
Good student and employee participation at a university hinges on involvement. In an ideal situation, candidates push themselves to run for participation bodies and the community of staff and students flock to the ballot box to vote for their favourite candidate.
The meagre interest in becoming a member of the Uraad or service council has been an issue for some time. "We see the applications for this declining, also among students, and this is really worrying," said U Council member Martijn Klabbers earlier in an interview with Cursor. "If we don't have good candidates and/or voters can't make a conscious choice, we also get less good control of the board."
Still, there are some new members on the council this year and there were more candidates than seats. The results for the U Council staff group:
- Kimberley Thissen (211)
- Ellen Konijnenberg (178)
- Remco Tuinier (171)
- Max van Mulken (103)
- Anton Darhuber (101)
- Martijn Klabbers (94)
- Harold Weffers (90)
- Victor Sánchez Martin (87)
- Michel van Eerd (87)
With 1240 valid votes and 153 blank votes, 31.96 per cent of eligible employees voted. Small note: for several years now, there have been problems inviting TU/e employees working at the Jheronimus Academy of Data Science (JADS) to the elections. For the next elections, improvement has been promised by TU/e vice president Patrick Groothuis.
The results for the student parties in the U Council:
Groep-één:
- Hieke van Heesch (202)
- Mart Bruijn (126)
- Sabien Lampe (40)
- Jasmin Gatcheva (77)
- Hilde Lucassen (91)
DAS Eindhoven:
- Thijs Schoenmakers (104)
- Nienke Wijngaart (54)
- Deen Slenter (74)
ONS:
- Jeannique Wagenaar (78)
For the student fractions, 3238 valid votes and 151 blank votes were cast out of a total of 13,069 students. Again, a relatively low turnout: 25.81 per cent voted.
