Intro 2023 | Gazpacho, glider planes and haute cuisine deep frying
Thursday truly had everything in store for any Intro attendees who still had some energy left and were eager to learn. The study associations offered a wide variety of workshops on campus and the three social associations also put on their instructor hats in the city center. Cursor ventured into the wonderful world of workshops as well.
In the kitchen of social association Demos on Keizersgracht, Cursor was eager to try its hand at the fine art of deep frying. There are no culinary boundaries, anything goes and as long as it fits in the basket of the eagerly bubbling deep-fat fryer, the sky’s the limit.
The strangest thing wrapped in puff pastry today, according to the Demos instructors, was a combination of sausage, melba toast and marshmallow topped with some chopped onions and pickle. “It’s loads of fun to make and a perfectly balanced meal,” so they assure us. Nevertheless, we decide stick to something slightly more modest ourselves: apple, banana, marshmallow, chocolate, cinnamon and a generous sprinkling of powdered sugar. The tasting panel says it is reminiscent of an oliebol.
Graffiti
Over at the Eindhoven Student Corps in their building on Ten Hagestraat, Intro attendees get the chance to find out if being a part-time DJ is something they might enjoy. And honestly, the beats are not bad, so maybe this dank association club really is the breeding ground for future Martin Garrixes. Out back in the garden, a graffiti workshop is taking place. It’s not very hard to find; just take a deep sniff and feel the creativity start to flow from the smell of the quickly dissipating spray-paint gases alone. The fact that upon participating in this workshop, Cursor mis-spells the name of its own medium (the “s” is turned into a “c”) doesn’t spoil the fun. We soon learn that this art form lends itself perfectly to swiftly covering up any slip-ups. But even though the participants are absolute newcomers, there are still a couple of stand-out gems on display.
Air conditioning
You can never go wrong with dancing, is what they must have thought at SSRE on Vestdijk. Here, people are dancing in large groups in front of screens where the Nintendo Wii gets everyone’s feet moving. What’s nice about the room where this all takes place is that it is air-conditioned, which is very welcome considering the temperatures and the effort it takes to follow all the dance moves.
It was an unexpected yet pleasant surprise that the proactive Cursor team would also be hosting a workshop themselves at SSRE this afternoon. During a foosball game, a resounding victory (10-1) is won over a pair of somewhat perplexed looking twins. This despite the fact that it is difficult to get the ball moving because of all sorts of sticky substances on the playing field. Even synthetic turf would have been an improvement. The mocktail making workshop makes a rather sleepy impression. Alcohol might help to liven things up, but unfortunately that is not allowed yet.
Mastering knife skills
Back on campus at the entrance to Atlas, David Reus, from the cooking committee of study association Japie, shows first-years how to keep their fingers as unscathed as possible during their first few weeks in the kitchen. He does so by preparing a cold tomato soup, a gazpacho. That involves chopping up a lot of raw vegetables, and so his first instruction is to always keep your fingers slightly bent. Reus explains that every month his cooking crew cooks a meal for thirty people at Japie. In response to the comment that that probably means chili con carne every time, he remarks, slightly indignantly, that this is certainly not the case. “We try something new every time and it’s always a proper three-course meal.” Talk about a seasoned chef!
Nearby, in the MetaForum Markthal, we find ice skating club Isis, where a few courageous first-years have strapped on some roller-blades. The skaters were, of course, also provided with plenty of protective gear such as elbow and knee pads and helmets. The pupils are doing pretty well and are even trying their hand at slaloms, squats and skating with their legs spread wide. The slipperiness of the Markthal floor is somewhat akin to that of an ice rink, or so we are told, so the next step to the real deal this coming winter shouldn’t be too difficult.
A little further on, sports association ZES has set up a couple of gliding simulators. Cursor also crawls into a cockpit, but soon threatens to plunge into the depths like a Russian warlord. Fortunately, the instructor quickly arrives on the scene to help us guide the plane back in the right direction. However, when we catch sight of the harbor, or rather the runway, we crash anyway.
This was just a small taste of everything the afternoon had to offer, but the crash has brought us down to earth somewhat, so we have decided to retreat behind our safe desks for now.
