Canteen prices to go up in January
While not surprising, it is still a shame: caterer Appèl will have to raise its prices. If you opt for a deluxe baguette and a cappuccino at a TU/e canteen in the new year, you’ll pay 44 cents more than in 2022. “We’re talking about a weighted indexation of 10 percent, but that’s just the average: we try to spare the healthy and sustainable choices”, says account manager Steven ten Cate.
The price indexation is substantial, agrees Steven ten Cate: “In previous years, we thought 1.5 percent was already a lot, and now we’re looking at 10 percent.” And Appèl has not even passed on the full price increase by suppliers, he says. “That number, calculated between January 1 and November 30, 2022, is just under 15 percent.”
The bright side is that the basic assortment will keep its low prices, as agreed with TU/e: coffee will stay available for 55 cents. Cups of (butter) milk, basic sandwiches, basic soup and pieces of fruit will also be kept at their fair prices.
Snacks
Those who prefer a more luxurious lunch can keep the costs down by opting for sustainable (often vegetarian) and/or healthy products. The prices of these products will not be increased or will be increased by only a few percent, Ten Cate says.
As a result, price increases at the other end of the spectrum may exceed 10 percent: “The prices of snacks will rise from 1.80 to 2.05 euros.” The same goes for deluxe baguettes, and a cappuccino will cost 2.08 euros, instead of 1.89.
Concerns
Those are steep prices, Appèl agrees. “We’re facing uncertain times and we’re genuinely worried: we cannot yet foresee what the effect of the price increases will be. We’re going to monitor our sales closely as of January.” However, not indexing prices is not an option, says Ten Cate: “We would be running at a loss.”
Participation
Appèl is looking for students and employees who want to participate in a panel discussion on the assortment offered in TU/e canteens. If you would like to give feedback and contribute creative ideas for improvements, please register via e-mail.
