I knew from the start of my Industrial Design master's, whenever the opportunity would arise to study abroad for a semester I would definitely do so. My preference was a Scandinavian country, and in mid-August I left for Stockholm to study at KTH.
The university campus is beautiful and old, with the oldest part dating back more than 100 years. The university here consists of 'chapters', similar to faculties in the Netherlands, where the chapter is also your study association. Students in Sweden often wear overalls or a dress suit with patches stitched onto it. You get these patches at activities you have participated in.
I had never been to Sweden or Scandinavia at all, but it attracted me. I now understand why; the nature, the culture and academically highly regarded. Stockholm is Sweden's biggest city but it doesn't always feel that way, this is because of the many water and nature in and close to the city and little to no high-rise buildings. The city is built on 14 islands connected by 57 bridges. Wherever you are, you will almost always see water.
Typically Swedish is 'doing a fika'. This is a coffee break, but with the mindset of taking a break from your day. This also fits the typical Swedish laidback mindset. The social aspect of fika is as important as what it seems to be about: the combination of fresh coffee with sugary pastries. The most classic is a kanelbulle; there is even a holiday dedicated to it.
You can easily take trips to surrounding towns and areas, for instance I went by boat to Tallinn and drove to Lapland in the far north. Going to Lapland was the biggest and most unique trip I took from here. There I also saw the northern lights, this was really a dream come true. I still plan to visit cities like Uppsalla, Gothenburg, Oslo and Copenhagen.
Even though the days are getting colder and shorter, I am really enjoying my stay in Stockholm. Very nice now that the city is completely in the Christmas spirit. I am happy with my choice, and grateful for this unforgettable experience. I will recommend to everyone, that when the opportunity arises, to study abroad for a period of time. I will miss Sweden very much and will definitely come back again.
