Fausto Gallucci to head department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry
The TU/e Board has appointed Fausto Gallucci as the new dean of the department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry, as of 1 October. The Italian is the third international dean currently serving at TU/e. Gallucci succeeds Emiel Hensen, who has served as dean of the department since 2016.
Gallucci (1974) is a full professor and leads the TU/e research group of Inorganic membranes and membrane reactors, which counts some thirty scientists. He joined TU/e in 2010, as assistant professor. In 2015 he became associate professor and in 2018 full professor.
The new dean started taking up organizational roles early on in his career. At the University of Calabria, where he obtained his chemical engineering degree, he was President of the Association of Chemical Engineering Students. In his professional career he has been, and still is, a member of a range of boards and committees. Furthermore he coordinates several large European research projects.
Collaboration
“I am honored and excited to start working as Dean”, says Gallucci. “I am proud to be part of this department, where Chemistry and Chemical Engineering co-exist and are both of very high quality. I want to further raise this quality by promoting scientific excellence and by attracting more talents. At the same time I want to further enhance our teaching offer to attract even more students.” Other important topics for the new dean are the department’s international reputation, and intensification of collaboration within the department. “And also with industry and other universities, in European collaborative programs.”
The new dean will continue his research and his position as head of his research group part-time. In principle he will divide his time equally between the department and his group, he says. “So the idea is 50/50, but in practice it will probably be more like 80/80.” He thinks he will have enough time to invest in the many European collaborations he is involved in. “I will certainly not leave any of the projects, and I intend to keep managing the projects that I am currently leading. For the other ones, my postdocs and PhD students will help me running the projects.”
Modern
Rector Frank Baaijens says the board is very pleased that an excellent candidate from within the university’s own ranks has been found. “With professor Gallucci the department gets a modern, progressive and strongly motivated dean, with the capacity to lift the excellent quality to an even higher level. His extensive experience in European collaborative public-private projects will help in intensifying the collaboration with industry. We wish him every success in his new role.”
Gallucci is Italian. He will be the third international dean serving at TU/e. The other two are Belgian Ingrid Heynderickx (IE&IS) and Lin-Lin Chen from Taiwan (Industrial Design). Gallucci succeeds professor Emiel Hensen, who has served as dean of the department since 2016.
