Wednesday March 18th | TU/e Community Radio will be broadcasting from 2.30 until 9.30 PM on Wednesday March 18th. In the evening the broadcast will be live with the international student association Cosmos (6.30-9.30 PM) Tune in on radio.tue.nl!
Community manager Erik de Jong realized that something had to be arranged when it was announced on Friday that TU/e would close its doors. "We want to support the community - and especially the internationals who are home alone, without family or friends. Let them know what is going on, that they are being thought of and to stay in contact with them," De Jong says. TU/e Community Radio has to achieve that. The language used for the radio programs is English.
During the last Intro, GEWIS - study association of the department of Mathematics and Computer Science - made a daily radio program. De Jong contacted GEWIS and soon after, this channel was live again to boost the sense of community. The hardware was hastily arranged via Information and Management Services (IMS) and a studio was built in Atlas. Three M&CS students are working hard to ensure that radio.tue.nl can be on air from 2.30 pm this afternoon. Those are Sabine Jongerius, Wout de Ruiter and Thomas Wiepking. Meanwhile, automotive student Melvyn Williams joined as the team’s technician.
Program
The planning is, for the time being, that they’ll make a program every day from 2.30 pm to 5.30 PM, with De Ruiter and Jongerius as the hosts. That broadcast will be repeated every day from 7:00 PM. Music will be played outside the program; requests can be made via the chat function - currently under construction - of the website.
"We are mainly looking for partnerships to create a program," says presenter Sabine Jongerius. The first plans are already made: David Ernst of Studium Generale will talk about hip-hop, Joep Huiskamp of General Affairs will share his knowledge about the history of the university. A call will be planned with community manager Erik de Jong, with the TU/e crisis team, and an item will be presented on how to keep yourself focused on studying. "We’ll call a student counselor for this, and we hope that students will also call in to make it interactive," Jongerius says.
It will be a process of learning by doing. For example, jingles and bumpers have to be made and more content for the program is still very welcome. "The big challenge is to be able to make interesting radio for the people sitting at home." So do you have an idea and would you like to make an item for TU/e Community Radio? Then send an email or call the hosts via +31(0)40-247 8113. "Everyone can make something for us from home, you don't have to come to the studio for that," Jongerius adds.
Spare time
The four students are now in the education-free week. "We still have some study load, but this is a lot of fun to do. All our weekend plans have been canceled anyway, as well as rehearsals, concerts and trainings. We have some time left," Jongerius says. It is not their intention to host and produce radiocontent themselves all three weeks the measures of the RIVM apply. "We try to arrange more hosts and technicians through other student associations."
