Are our first-year students still coping?
The Intro was a hybrid mix of on-campus and online activities. During the first quartile, the question at hand was how many hours a week will students actually spend within the walls of their departmental building. Far from an ideal start to a vibrant academic year for our first-year students. Cursor set off with the camera to hear their stories. We also wanted to know what’s being done to support them and to ensure that they can still get the most out of student life.
One of the people you’ll hear from in the video below is Lara Hofstra. She was appointed TU/e’s first Student Diversity Officer in June of this year, but student wellbeing featured prominently on her agenda long before that time. Lara too is worried about the newcomers, and in this video she shares her tips on how to get through these difficult times together.
With the holiday season upon us, she is currently busy organizing the ‘TU/e Winter Special 2020.’ This event will take place around Christmas and in the days just after the New Year, and is intended for both international and Dutch students and staff members. The Hubble Community Café in Luna will prepare a festive three-course takeout menu on 25, 26 and 31 December. Students and staff members can sign up for this in small groups for only five euros at Hubble, Lara says.
The Student Sports Center will open its doors on 28, 29 and 30 December and on 2 and 3 January, and will offer its sport card holders a full sports program between 12:00 and 17:00 hrs. There is much to choose from: fitness, group lessons, swimming, or activities in the large halls organized by the sports associations. Immediately afterwards, between 17:30 and 23:00, extra activities will take place for which a sport card is not required: group lessons, disco swimming and disco spinning.
On Friday 11 December, the website www.winter.tue.nl will go live, here you'll find the first part of the program.
