And how are things in Brisbane?
At the end of my bachelor Applied Mathematics I decided to go abroad during my master. After a few meetings it turned out that my supervisor had contacts with the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, for a graduation project. Australia is an English-speaking country far away from the Netherlands, which was exactly what I wanted and so it all began. Now, one year later, I am in this beautiful country with a western, though completely different culture and I’m having the time of my life.
Of course, such a big journey consists of multiple parts. It starts with the project. For me this consumes by far the most of my time and fortunately, I like the subject very much. During my four months here I have my own desk where I work five days a week. I must admit that I couldn’t have imagined better supervisors than I have right now. They always think along with me and are very flexible. The other people around me are also very helpful and interested, actually everybody in Australia seems to be.
A second important part is making friends, meeting new people and enjoying your free time. You’ll need it. When I just got here, I was really bored during the evenings. It’s not easy to approach people you don’t know and it takes some time to find associations and make new contacts. For now, I am active at two associations and I've started making new friends to do fun activities together.
That also brings me to the last and also the best part of this trip: sightseeing! Everything around you is new and there is not a weekend that I’m wasting at home. I always look for new activities to do, such as visiting the city, hiking in nature, going to wildlife parks and planning trips for the weekend. I think that’s the best part about Brisbane, and even of Australia in whole. I love nature and here you’ll find wild animals everywhere, such as possums, bats, whales, dolphins and kangaroos. I even spotted a wild koala! Fortunately, the snakes and spiders haven’t showed themselves up till now. In the meantime, I’ve also been to Gold Coast and last weekend I spent on the biggest sand island of Australia with an exchange student association.
I've been in Australia for 1.5 months now and I still have 2.5 months of my project to go. After that, I will go on a tour for four weeks, that will consist of a trip along the east coast from Brisbane to Sydney, an arranged tour through Tasmania and a road trip along the Great Ocean Road near Melbourne. In total, I will be away for five months and I won’t deny that I sometimes look forward to the moment that I will see my family and friends again. Despite this I am enjoying this unique experience with all that I have and I really recommend everyone to go abroad during your study time. Even if it’s expensive or scary and even if you are going to really miss your homeland, it will all be worth it!
