Training wheels for drunken cyclists

Students on a night out with too much to drink can worry less about falling off their bikes from now on. Training wheels will allow them to find their way home in a straight line.

Youth organization TeamAlert introduces the so-called 'Drunk Wheels' today. “In Utrecht, we saw many students get on their bikes while drunk. Of course, we prefer that they all take a taxi, but that’s an illusion. Drunk Wheels allows them to get home safely,” says TeamAlert spokeswoman Hanna Hamans, who does research on risk behavior among youth and young adults.

The campaign is targeted mainly at students. They can affix the training wheels to their bikes before they go out. Isn’t the idea of students with training wheels a bit childish? Hamans expects that the students will find it funny instead of childish. TeamAlert hopes the initiative will be successful and offers the first hundred Drunk Wheels free of charge.

TeamAlert tested the training wheels on 122 young adults and found that they rode their bikes more steadily. They also felt safer when riding their bikes home with Drunk Wheelsaffixed. TeamAlert does advise young adults against riding a bike when their blood alcohol level is higher than 1.5; this comes down to seven glasses for men and five for women.

Note 1 April 2019: We already expressed our doubts on social media last week and indeed: this story seems to be an April Fool's Day joke
