Sustainable Bachelor’s Intro and broader Master’s Kick-off

Sustainability is an important element in the upcoming Bachelor’s Intro, and the Master’s Kick-off focuses more explicitly on all new master's students and for the first time also on pre-master's students. Good news for those who are not big fans of cheese sandwiches for lunch; this year the meals at both introductions will be more varied and ‘more international’. This year’s Bachelor’s Intro will be from August 17 through 23 and the Master’s Kick-off will take place from August 27 through 29.

What exactly will be done to make the Intro more sustainable is not yet clear, but the Intro committee already has enough ideas. Henriëtte Eijking, chairman of the committee: “We want to reduce the use of plastic. The food will be packaged for groups, and no longer per person. We also plan not to distribute individual water bottles every day, but to give a reusable bottle and to provide more water taps. Of course we would also love to hear from people if they still have ideas of their own.” The Intro Committee also hopes to do well in the sustainability competition in which various universities participate during the Intro.

Little has changed about the Bachelor’s Intro program, to which the ‘Spread your wings’ theme is linked. Eijking: "Experience and previous evaluations have shown that this set-up works well." As in previous years, there will be a variety between informative parts like a business case and an information market and relaxing activities - such as workshops, a city tour through Eindhoven and parties. The intro kids can enjoy performances from DJ-duo Pep & Rash, Band with Benefits (both on Monday), singer Kafke (on Wednesday) and Rave van Fortuin (on Friday).

The Central Intro Committee wants to involve all new master's students more in the Master’s Kick-off this year, which includes our bachelor’s students that continue to a master and pre-master’s students. They can also take part in the program this year, for the first time. The organization has approached study associations, handed out flyers and put up posters to bring this to the attention of current students. They will soon be invited, via social media, to participate.

Department, Community and Challenge Day

To cater to all target groups, some components will be slightly different, Sjoerd Telkamp and Rowan Appelman from the organization explain. Participants will enjoy a Department Day - where they are introduced to their department -, a Company Day - where different companies are paid a visit - and a Challenge Day - where they can work in multidisciplinary teams on business cases. Telkamp: "For the most part the participants will take part in the same activities as other intro kids, but we also want the students who have been walking around here longer to get to know the departments in a different way." During the Master’s Kick-off there will also be room for relaxation and the participants will pay a visit to the Student Sports Centre.

For both introductions the budget for food has increased, especially because the international students in particular found it difficult to get used to the typical Dutch sandwiches. The participants of the Bachelor’s Intro will enjoy food from different countries; for example one day Italian cuisine might be served and the other day Mexican meals and at the Master’s Kick-off there will be several buffets.

Both committees do not yet know how many participants they have to expect. They hope to gain more insight into this soon.
