More color in De Zwarte Doos
For the first time since the opening of De Zwarte Doos in 2006, the restaurant area will be renovated. This will start next Monday in the quiet period around carnival. Caterer Vermaat has a new concept, with street food and arthouse as the main pillars, that will be created in the restaurant in two weeks. Immediately afterwards, the new University Club in Atlas will close for a little over a week, because then the final bar will be placed there.
From the still predominant red color little more will be seen in De Zwarte Doos after March 11th. The furniture, the floor and the walls, even the red bar next to the path outside the entrance, will get a 'more modern' look. There will be a lot of green, steel and wood. Manager Loes Overdevest calls it an urban jungle style. Steel shelves with many plants will be placed opposite the stairs, next to the entrance and above the bar.
The gray wall along the stairs will be covered with images from movies. That is to involve the cinema where Studium Generale shows films three times a week, more in the restaurant. De Zwarte Doos will become much more colorful and will also get a different menu with new flavors. The manager calls this style street food and arthouse.
World cuisine
Overdevest: "The trio of bagels, burritos and burgers, for which we have had five years of variations, will no longer be offered. This will be replaced by dishes from around the world. A varied offer with American, Italian and Oriental dishes. And because of its success we’ll continue to serve our chef’s three-course daily menu.
On Monday morning, February 25th at 8:00 am the furniture will be collected by a buyer who will arrange its reuse. The new furniture, in shades of green, is only available at the end of April, but the supplier ensures that there will be loan furniture at the opening on the 11th of March.
It is the first remodeling of the Zwarte Doos ever, except for a facelift of the upper floor. That happened when the main building was closed and the University club needed another accommodation for four years.
Futuristic bar
The University Club has been back on the first floor of Atlas since the 28th of January. Because the connections for electricity, water and drainage were not yet in order, a temporary bar was installed. This modern square bar will be replaced from March 7th by a round white one, in the style of the outlets on the ground floor of Atlas and the reception there.
That period was chosen because there will be an education-free week in connection with carnival and because of the drilling and grinding noise that is expected. Starting March 11th, the bar will be mounted and later new carpets will be laid on the floor and curtains will be hung on the rails at the University Club. On the 18th of March the restaurant will be open again.
Publicly accessible
The University Club consists of the restaurant and three large meeting rooms: 1.650, 1.652 and 1.654. Manager Overdevest regrets that few people are aware that the restaurant of the University Club is publicly accessible. "Everyone is welcome for lunch, dinner or drinks and the prices are equivalent to restaurants in the city center." Catering for the three mentioned meeting rooms can be ordered through the University club and may not be provided by yourself.
