Familiar faces among student athletes of the year
In keeping with tradition, the best of Eindhoven's student athletes in 2018 were honored in community café Hubble on Tuesday evening. At the annual Student Sports Gala hosted by sports federation ESSF, which pulled out all the stops to ensure the event went ahead in spite of its governance issues, the best student athletes, the best sports team and the best sports association were announced.
The rugby players of The Elephants were nominated no fewer than three times: in the categories sportsman, sportswoman and sports team of the year. But the association went home empty-handed, like others including Zephyr, the e-sports association nominated in the team category.

By contrast, rowing association Thêta and athletics club Asterix, both nominated twice, ran away with the prizes. Thêta was able to raise another toast to Sander de Graaf, who found himself rewarded for the second year running for his performance in the national and international rowing scene. Similarly, track athlete Marissa Damink extended her Eindhoven student sportswoman title - last year her triumphs included bronze at the national championships and gold at the national student championships, indoors and outdoors.
Sports club of the year was awarded to table tennis club Taveres, while the cheerleading squad of gymnastics association Suca can spend a year wallowing in the glory they earned as best team. The women stood on the highest level of the winner's podium at the Dutch championships. The winners were decided in advance of the gala based on the jury's opinion and votes cast by the sports associations and the general public.
After the awards ceremony there were performances by B-boy and master of balance Paulance (TU/e alumnus), The Boys Band and DJ Koen Barten.
Members of student photography and film association Dekate Mousa were among the gala's guests. Some of their photo impressions are shown below.
