Eindhoven crowns new wrestling king and queen
Sixteen men and eight women went into battle Wednesday evening during the second Eindhoven Wrestling Gala hosted by Simon Stevin. In a cheerfully aggressive ambiance, Mirthe Mampaey (upcoming board member of the organizing study association) and Martijn Adriaans (Van der Waals) managed to take the titles as the new wrestling queen and king of Eindhoven.
Sietse Wolberink, retiring wrestling king, surveys the scene from the bottom steps of the MetaForum stairway with satisfaction. This year, as a jury member, his jobs include ensuring etiquette rules are strictly observed; via the microphone, he and his colleagues spring into action when the female participants appear to be about to wrestle while not wearing a choker (or if need be a borrowed tie).

Supremely objective, however, the novice jury member is not; that he is pinning his hopes on a final between the representatives of rowing association Thêta and society HenK (two groups of which he is a hard core member) is something he makes no bones about. They've got it in them, declares the TU/e student, who has gladly taught the newcomers some of the finer points of the wrestler's craft.

But he ends up disappointed. In the steaming market hall, the men's final brings Martijn Adriaans (study association Van der Waals) up against an unexpected, and until this evening inexperienced, opponent: Erwin Oosterbosch of technical secondment agency Xelvin (the event's sponsor). Oosterbosch, laughing: “I was the underdog of course; it wouldn't do at all for the sponsor to win. The presenter even asked me if I would hold back a little. But that only made me more fanatical.”
Exhausted
As for the bonus wrestle between the brand new king and queen of the evening, that remains undecided. After nearly a minute of pulling and pushing, Mirthe Mampaey (‘Upcoming 62’ of Simon Stevin) wrestles Martijn Adriaans to the floor, but the jury is not convinced that Adriaans was ever actually lying on his back. But there is no rematch of this battle of the titans; Mampaey shakes her head and throws the proverbial towel in the ring. There's nothing left in the tank.
