In search of the Hajraa Outdoor Tournament feeling
Year after year television makers have gone to Nijmegen in search of the 'Four-day Hike' feeling, but what exactly is the feeling associated with the Hajraa Outdoor Tournament? Begun in 1979 as a low-key, light-hearted event, it has since developed into the world's largest grass volleyball tournament. This past weekend it drew no fewer than five thousand enthusiasts to Eindhoven.
For the fortieth time, the Outdoor Tournament was held this weekend. With ‘Back to the 70s’ as its theme, the event recalled its roots with fitting nostalgia. The Hajraa organizers pulled out all the festive stops for the occasion, providing - as well as the regular matches on 120 courts, the Netherlands student championship, parties on both Friday and Saturday evenings and a huge campsite on the campus - a lustrum drinks party for former members, and the Dela Premier League Beach Eindhoven. To host these proceedings, the organizers spread their wings to the city center, with the main court for the beach competition set up in Eindhoven's market square.
Some fifteen hundred participants in total, grouped in some five hundred teams, did sporting battle this weekend at Sportpark De Hondsheuvels. Our video reporter Bart Versteeg spent a couple of hours mingling with the volleyball players from the Netherlands and abroad and went in search of the Outdoor Tournament feeling.
