Intro 2018 | Wakan Doe'k is not afraid of an escaperoom

It is a sad and hopeless image, the large white sheet with just two records of timely escapes from the escaperoom at the market hall. Only two (of the so far nineteen) Intro groups managed to escape the room this Tuesday within the ten minutes set for this challenge. But let’s keep hope: at the end of the day, GEWIS group 5, a.k.a. Wakan Doe'k, is the last to make a valiant effort.

Light bulbs on the wall, some vague images, a menacing countdown clock, a photobooth: an apparently incoherent collection of objects decorates the interior of the escaperoom. The members of Wakan Doe'k (best translated as Brabants for: 'what I can do, I will do') seem to be completely helpless and gazing around to decipher the various clues.

But, according to intro mama Pim Booij, Cursor’s fly on the wall couldn’t be more wrong, as he will correct a few minutes later - outside that is. Booij speaks of a completely organic process within this harmonious Intro family, almost invisible to outsiders, which hardly needs direction or imposed structure. "We know each other for almost two days already after all."

Warming up

The fact that this team is so well attuned despite spending less than thirty hours together, is clear when Wakan Doe'k finds its way out from the room after an impressive five minutes and sixteen seconds: a good minute and a half faster than the best group until then. "We are mathematicians", Mama Booij adds carelessly. The escaperoom of the Rabobank, a bit further away, had been a nice warm-up for a while; Booij set the third fastest time of the day together with one of his intro kids.

The mobile, tailor-made escaperoom has recently become the property of the Career Academy and the Skills Lab of the TU/e and today it made its debut as a branding tool for the cooperating organizations. They want to use the unit, in which among other qualities the teamwork of players is explicitly tested, to deploy more events, but also use them for, for example, team activities of (groups of) TU/e employees.
