Each year, the KNAW – the country’s leading association for top scientists and academics – selects a limited number of new members. They are being selected on the basis of their scientific achievements. This membership is a great homage in the Netherlands for a scientific career. A membership is for life.
Remco van der Hofstad heads the Probability research group of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. He is also the scientific director of the European research institute Eurandom, one of the co-applicants of the NETWORKS gravity program, and acting spokesman for the Dutch Mathematics platform ‘Platform Wiskunde Nederland’.
The KNAW was founded in 1808 as an advisory body to the government, a task also performed today. The independent association is “the forum, the voice and the conscience of science in the Netherlands”.
