Bands line up for Plugged student festival
Close on a hundred bands registered for the sixth edition of the Plugged Festival, to be held June 7 on the KOE field. This is roughly five times as many as in previous years, say the organizers, who eventually signed up eleven acts for a varied line-up on two stages. In addition, Plugged may well be the stage for a pilot of reusable drinking beakers.
No, they didn't need to hold a multi-day audition marathon to make a good musical selection, tells Architecture, Building and Planning student Mieke Kools, who is helping to decorate the annual student festival. What the Plugged organizers did do, however, was listen to the most serious candidates. A good musical mix was a chief aim. But something the musical groups all have in common is that they are quite new and upcoming. “We really want to offer a stage to new talent,” points out Kools. “And especially to local talent,” adds co-organizer Bob van der Vleugel. Two names have already been announced: Mozes and the Firstborn, and Waltzburg. The other acts will be revealed on Facebook in the run-up to the festival.
Like last year, Plugged has two stages. Bands play sets lasting on average a half hour to an hour. As to the size of the audience they'll play to, that can vary, says Kools, from roughly a thousand to two thousand people - and depends in no small measure on the weather.
Reusable beakers
The Plugged Festival may well have a hint of sustainability about it thanks to a collaboration with the GO Green Office at TU/e. They are working on a pilot of reusable beakers at events on campus. “It is our ambition to see this become the norm at TU/e,” explains Josien de Koning of the GO Green Office. The idea is that event visitors buy a beaker when they arrive (probably for a token worth one refreshment serving) and then keep swapping it for a new beaker (full of beer they'll pay for). “If everything is ready in time, we plan to use these beakers at Plugged.”
The Plugged Festival takes place on June 7 from 16.00 to 00.00 hrs on the KOE field, between Vertigo and the Auditorium on the TU/e campus. Entry is free.
In the meantime, the 'Play Me' Plugged guitar is roving the campus, available to anyone who wants to try and strike the right chord. Whoever who makes a short film of this will immediately have a chance of winning a prize; follow the Plugged messages on Facebook.
