Student Shop must ‘bunk’ with Notebook Service Center
The Student Shop in MetaForum will be moving in with the Notebook Service Center, a few meters along on the same floor. This has been decided by the Executive Board. For a short time the survival of the desk selling student supplies, which is making way for the ICT Service's helpdesk, was in doubt.
Staff of the Student Shop collected almost eight hundred signatures and presented them to the Executive Board. Their aim was to keep the facility at the same spot in MetaForum. Their efforts were to no avail. Still, the signatures have raised awareness of the importance of the Student Shop, thinks Monique Kuyck, head of Operational Services at Internal Affairs. “We would have preferred to have stayed at our present location, but we understand that TU/e is struggling with a lack of space. It is just the way things are, and wishing things were different won't get us anywhere.” Kuyck foresees a great deal of work for the Student Shop. “The product range will have to be reviewed. We'll need to keep the fast-moving products, but those we've stocked ‘because we've got the space’ will probably go. We will also be looking at whether we can offer readers for sale in an online construction.” Over the summer Matrix will need to be empty for the renovation work required to create Innovation Space. The ICT back office and the Communication Expertise Center will be leaving for Kennispoort by June 13 at the latest. By that time, the present Student Shop premises will not yet have been refurbished as an employee servicedesk. Kuyck cannot yet say exactly when the relocation can take place. “I have not yet heard anything other than that Matrix will close on July 8. It will still be in use during the last exam period. The renovation work in MetaForum must be completed by the end of June, early July.” In the new situation, the Student Shop's two members of staff will be managed by IT manager Henk Boom of the ICT Service.
