De Zaale junction set to become intersection
The traffic junction where De Zaale and Het Eeuwsel roads meet on campus, which is often mistaken for a roundabout, is set to become a straightforward intersection. This will bring to an end the confusion about who has priority here. The introduction of speed bumps should ensure that people drive less fast. Moreover, the cobblestones will be re-laid. Consequently, the through road De Zaale will be closed to traffic from Monday July 10 through Friday August11.
“We've often received questions and comments about this particular spot,” remarks Thijs Mooren of Real Estate Management. “We wanted to bring an end to the confusing situation, and because the road surface had to be re-laid anyway, we decided to tackle the problem." Once the work has been completed, it should be clear this is an intersection. The new intersection will be raised, zebra crossings will be added, and in places the road will narrow. According to Mooren, vehicle speeds on this road section are often too fast, and the new measures are intended to encourage drivers to reduce their speed. The cobblestones, which are uneven in places, will be rearranged. In addition, a couple of sewage pipes in that road section have recently been repaired. Take a look at the ground plan of the finished area.
The through road De Zaale will be closed to all traffic from Monday July 10 through August 11 2017, including car drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. Detour signs will be in place from the start of De Insulindelaan, indicating the best route to take to reach the buildings and car parks. You can see on the map and the traffic plan how the traffic is directed to the right buildings and car parks.
Similarly, at the other end of De Zaale, level with Atlas, the road is also closed due to the work being done on that building. This work will continue until November, Mooren informs us. Only between July 31 and August 18 will the section of De Zaale road at the underpass on the north side of the Atlas building be temporarily open to traffic, including construction traffic. For this period Eindhoven's fun fair, Park Hilaria, will be open and construction work on Atlas will be halted.
