E-sports and survival run firsts at GNSK in Eindhoven
E-sports and survival running will be debuting in June as optional sports at the Great Dutch Universities Championship (GNSK). Organized for the 59th time, this major national multi-top sport event is being held this year in Eindhoven, partly in honor of the fiftieth birthday of TU/e's Student Sports Center. The organizers are expecting some 1500 participants.
Nena Leenen (Fontys graduate, now working as a nurse) is a member of the eight-strong committee that has been busy organizing the 59th GNSK since June of last year. Eight sports, say this PR officer, are regular fixtures: outdoor soccer, tennis, basketball, badminton, handball, fencing, volleyball and squash.
In addition, this year's program offers the optional sports of water polo, ultimate frisbee, indoor soccer, sport climbing, korfball, golf, cycling, judo, e-sports and a survival run. The last two sports are making their debut at this year's GNSK.
The GNSK in Eindhoven will take place at a range of locations in the city, including, of course, the Student Sports Center and the nearby sports park De Hondsheuvels. Sporting activity can also be found at Fontys Sports University of Applied Sciences, the Indoor Sports Center, the High Tech Campus, Golf Center Eindhoven and on the cycling track at sports park Op Noord.
This isn't the first time the GNSK has come to Eindhoven. In 2012, as the host city's team, Eindhoven came top of the final ranking. The following year Team Eindhoven had to be satisfied with sixth place. Although Leenen, busy now with the event organization, won't be able to lend her sporting ability, she feels, “It would be great, of course, if Eindhoven could win again on its own turf this year.”
Participants of the GNSK (on June 9, 10 and 11) can register from March 1st. Anyone wishing to lend a hand as a volunteer during the event, can also register; the organizers are looking for about 150 people.
