Just for the fun of it: flying Christmas trees above the pond
The first TU/e Christmas market could hardly have got off to a more Christmassy start on Monday, in a 'market hall' surrounded by a thick blanket of snow. The firing of Christmas trees from a cannon, the promised opening activity, unfortunately suffered some initial delay - but for anyone who missed it, there was another chance to see it on Tuesday afternoon.
Instigator Erik de Jong, TU/e community manager, regards the scene around him with satisfaction on Tuesday afternoon - between giving interviews to two camera crews. A few meters ahead of him, on the stairs of the 'market hall', the members of mixed choir Vokollage of student music society Quadrivium are setting the mood with Christmas carols. Outdoors preparations are underway for the next Christmas tree launch across the pond - watched by mostly amazed passersby with their smartphones at the ready.
De Jong is pleased with the good start made by the Christmas market. "It would be nice to see a few more people on the cafe terrace with a drink in hand or enjoying a bite to eat," he hopes aloud. But, on the other hand, he acknowledges the weather: "Admittedly, it is cold. Personally I'm wearing two pairs of socks and thermal underwear, and with good reason."
On Tuesday December 19 there will be a dinner with Christmas carols sung by the staff choir CantaTU and student choir Vokollage. "This is warmly recommended. It will be really enjoyable," promises De Jong. It is still possible to sign up for the musical dinner.
The Christmas market on the TU/e grounds will be held up to and including Thursday December 21.
