Living on campus | “My own great little place”

Before she moved into her studio in Luna and was still living in her home town of Landgraaf, 18-year-old Veerle Lemmens spent a very long time looking for housing. But once she had moved, she felt right at home: “This really is my own little place. I like a tidy house and having privacy. Now there is no one else I have to keep happy, and when I need company, I can go in search of it.”

The first-year student of Psychology & Technology intends to look for new accommodation if the rent rises at Luna. “I and my girlfriends may well look for a flat or house we can share. That would be fun too.”

For Veerle, handling her budget took the most getting used to, that and doing her food shopping by bike in the center of Eindhoven. But she also misses her mum, and especially her twin sister, very much. “Luckily we still see each other a lot. And now going back home is that much more fun.”

Although she initially thought she knew no one on campus, she immediately ran into familiar faces from Limburg when she came to see her studio and during her move. “That felt really good and familiar right away. And the people on my floor here popped round in my first week to introduce themselves. One of them even borrowed my TV so he could install his PlayStation. And for this part of our floor, we even have a WhatsApp group.”

She is confident that more group activities will be organized once the communal rooms are ready. “You know, we often sat up on the roof terrace together when the weather was still nice. So I’m sure that will happen.”

She is enjoying her study program, although she finds it very technical; she had expected a greater emphasis on psychology. “I may still decide to do my first-choice study program, one that would mean I could become an air traffic controller. But for the time being I am keeping all my options open.”
