Aurora apartment block nearly ready for residents
The new Aurora apartment block that rose up behind Traverse on the TU/e campus last year is nearly ready. The contractor expects to finish off the final bits and pieces this week so that residents can start moving in to one of the building’s thirteen floors.
Aurora has three hundred and three student residencies of various sizes that are rented out by the Vestide housing corporation and are intended for international students studying at TU/e for both the shorter and longer term.
The first occupants of the new apartment block will be the current spacebox residents. The spaceboxes along the Dommel have to be vacant by 5 August at the latest. The housing corporation has given some of these another destination, after eleven years on the TU/e campus, in a housing project on the Willemstraat.
The rental contracts with the first four future tenants were signed last week. Today, Wednesday 27 July, the other hundred internationals leaving the spaceboxes will sign their contracts with the housing corporation and then move in to their fully furnished homes.
The remaining nearly two hundred units have already been allocated to shortstayers, a spokesperson for the housing corporation has announced. They will be signing their contracts from 3 August.
Two Dutch students will also be moving in to the complex. They will act as the first points of contact for the Aurora tenants - also in the event of any complaints. Last May some of the spacebox residents expressed concern about their new homes in the apartment block.
A point of criticism was the higher rent and, in the eyes of some, the limited shared facilities. When asked about these concerns, Vestide district manager Harald Evers said that while he did not share these directly, he would certainly take note of the noises being made. “If it does become evident that certain aspects are not what they should be and that there is room for improvement, then we will investigate together.”
Aurora’s official opening will be on 10 September, with the TU/e Executive Board, among others, in attendance. Before then Luna - the second apartment block on the university campus, formerly the Potentiaal building - will also open its doors. This building, with 441 living units operated by Camelot, will welcome its first tenants at the end of August.
