New-build residential tower block approaching top
This week work will begin on the top floor of the new residential tower block being built on campus, between Traverse and the river Dommel. As of August the flats will be rented out to international students and PhD candidates of TU/e so that they can move in before the new academic year.
The construction, commissioned by Vestide (which is part of Woonbedrijf Eindhoven) is proceeding successfully. Huybregts-Relou construction company has not had any setbacks so far. Better still: the activities are ahead of planning. By mid-July the flats will be completed and Woonbedrijf expects it can rent them out as of August.
Marten Dijkshoorn from Real Estate Management is responsible for the call for tenders of the underground infrastructure and the site finishing. About the construction he says: “Whereas we were expecting two working weeks per floor, this has been reduced to six working days. Today they are starting on the top floor, the fourteenth floor. The speed is high thanks to the fact that the elements are ready-made at Hurks concrete factory in Veldhoven. By now it has turned into a stacking trick.” The tower block, which does not have a name yet – although the working name says Parkview on the banner in front of the tower - is intended to accommodate international students and PhD candidates of TU/e. There will be room for 303 persons. There are 121 small and 66 big rooms, 12 independent two-room flats and 104 group homes. The tower will be the first permanent accommodation on campus. The 186 space cabins on the TU/e campus being rented out by Vestide at present, were placed there in 2005 by way of temporary solution for a student accommodation shortage. As of August 16 they will be dismantled. Their inhabitants have the first choice in the new tower. The remaining flats will be offered to international students and PhD candidates of TU/e. According to Vestide, rents will depend on furnishings and fittings, energy rates, Internet connection and park management by TU/e and are hence not yet known. They will definitely remain within the limits agreed with TU/e by Vestide: the rent of the students’ rooms in the group homes will be around € 200. The independent one-room flats will on average have a basic rent of around € 350.
