“Input TU/e at DDW should be as broad as possible”

For the Mind the Step exhibition, where the three universities of technology can show their most appealing designs during the Dutch Design Week at the end of October, organizer Lucas Asselbergs is trying to get the broadest input possible. The DDW allows students, PhD candidates and researchers access to an unparalleled podium, says the head of Studium Generale. Proposals can be submitted up until May 15.

"Contributions from all departments will be most welcome", says Asselbergs. "It is not correct that Mind the Step should be regarded as the exclusive podium for Industrial Design and Architecture, Building and Planning, traditionally the departments that have contributed the greatest number of designs. In principle all technology is welcome, as long as the transition to the user has been visualized properly and the societal relevance is evident."

According to Asselbergs, any design that establishes a link between the societal challenge and technology has a chance of being exhibited in the Klokgebouw, one of the main hotspots of the DDW.

In 2015 no less than 300,000 people from the Netherlands and abroad visited the DDW. "What other place can you think of where you find such a podium?", says Asselbergs. "Last year mayor Rob van Gijzel called Mind the Step the most interesting exhibition of the DDW. Precisely because of the technical aspect which is so strongly represented here, and the research that is linked to it.”

Proposals can be submitted up until May 15, after which a first selection is made on May 23 and contributors can be asked to submit additions to the materials supplied. June 24 is the date of the final selection.

In the end, the contributions selected will be displayed in the Klokgebouw during the DDW from October 22 thru 30.
