Health is one of the three strategic focal areas of TU/e, in addition to Smart Mobility and Energy, with TU/e being the first Dutch university to offer a Bachelor in Biomedical Engineering. The university is keen to operate globally and profile its research in this field.

Carmen van Vilsteren gained her degree in Industrial Engineering and Design with honors in 1985 from the TU Delft and comes with an impressive background in industry. She has been active in both startups and multinationals, most recently as Solution Development Manager for the Material Science Business Unit at FEI Company (2008-2015). Before this, between 1986 and 2004, she worked in a variety of jobs at Philips Healthcare, specifically at the Cardio Vascular X-ray division, where she successfully led the development of different new systems that have been commercialized.

The new Health director is really looking forward to her new role. It fits here like a glove, she says. “The central thread of my career lies in high-tech innovation in healthcare and that is also my passion. My experience in industry is largely complementary to the knowledge TU/e already has. I believe that it is exactly this combination that is really powerful and will help me to extend and strengthen the SA Health.”

The TU/e Executive Board is pleased that Van Vilsteren is joining as director at Health. “Carmen van Vilsteren gives us someone who unites the qualities that such a key position demands,” says Executive Board President Jan Mengelers. “More than ever we are looking for connections and collaboration with external partners and parties. She has considerable experience at the interface of health, research and technology. Furthermore, she has earned her spurs in industry, something that is crucial in leading this Strategic Area. Moreover, she knows the ecosystem of Brainport. TU/e has high expectations.”

The SA Health wants to have technology with a human face. The aim is to translate the high-grade engineering knowledge at TU/e into technological solutions. Not only in a complex and expensive hospital environment but also to enable the transition to primary and preliminary care (self-care). The ultimate goal is to reduce the costs of care and boost the quality of life.
