Parkinson’s expert recipient of Holst Memorial Lecture Award
Prof. Bas Bloem is the recipient of the Holst Memorial Lecture Award 2015. Bloem is a consultant neurologist at Radboud university medical centre in Nijmegen, and an internationally recognized expert in Parkinson’s disease. He is awarded the honor for his research and initiatives in Healthcare Innovation. He will deliver his Holst Memorial Lecture on Thursday 26 November at TU/e.
Professor Bas Bloem is a consultant neurologist and Parkinson’s disease expert at the Radboud university medical centre (Radboudumc) in Nijmegen. In 2002 he initiated the renowned Parkinson Center Nijmegen (ParC), of which he is medical director. Together with Dr. Marten Munneke, he developed ParkinsonNet: an innovative and award-winning healthcare network concept.
As of 2008 Bloem is professor at Radboudumc. He has two main research interests: cerebral compensatory mechanisms, especially in the field of gait and balance; and healthcare innovation, aiming to develop and scientifically evaluate patient‐centered collaborative care. He was elected as the National Healthcare Hero by the Dutch ministry of Health. Bloem has published over 410 peer-reviewed papers.
Since 1977, Philips Research and TU/e organize an annual symposium and Memorial Lecture in honor of dr. Gilles Holst, the founding director of the famous Philips Physics Laboratories. Holst was also involved as an advisor in the founding process of TU/e in 1956.
The list of former Holst Memorial Lecturers includes Nobel Laureates Alan Heeger, Arno Penzias and Shuji Nakamura and eminent scientists and innovators Craig Venter and Nicholas Negroponte.
The theme chosen for these lectures reflects the important contribution of Dr. Gilles Holst to research and technology: ‘the development of applied sciences, particularly mathematics and the natural sciences, for the benefit of industry on the one side and their implications for society on the other.’ The Holst Memorial Lecture Award Medal, a portrait of Gilles Holst, is designed by the famous Dutch medalist Jos Reniers.
Prof. Bloem’s Lecture ‘Healthcare Networks need Innovative Technology and vice versa’ is scheduled for Thursday 26 November, 16.00 hrs (Auditorium TU/e). His lecture will conclude the preceding Holst Symposium ‘Connected Health’.
Participation (symposium and Holst Memorial Lecture) is free of charge. Registration however is obligatory; the number of seats available is limited.
