And how are things in Edinburgh?
For my semester abroad I’m residing in Scotland, the country of castles, whisky, the highlands, sheep, rugged landscapes and wilderness. To be more specific I’m residing in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, a beautiful old historic city and the birth place of Harry Potter, where I study at Napier University.
On the introduction day of Napier University we had a social event during the day where they immediately pulled out the Haggis, Scottish treats and of course the whiskey, so the international students could get well acquainted with Scotland.
Napier University consists of three campuses which are all located outside the city centre. The center of the city is Edinburgh Castle, on top of a volcanic rock. It can be seen from everywhere in the city and therefore directions are often given on the basis of the castle. The first primitive Scots lived at the foot of this volcanic rock and the castle had been conquered and reconquered throughout the centuries. Now Edinburgh Castle is connected with the Scottish parliament through the Royal Mile, the touristic main street.
Besides the castle there are lots of thing to do and see in Edinburgh, such as the Harry Potter tours. Edinburgh is seen as the birthplace of Harry Potter because J.K.Rowling wrote her famous books here and got the inspiration for her characters and Hogwarts from the city; one of the sights visited during the tour is “Voldermort’s grave”. And of course it is also possible to drink a cup of coffee in The Elephant House, where they are very proud that J.K.Rowling wrote the books in their café.
You don’t have to worry about food or drinks, in Edinburgh there are 732 pubs. Enough choices if you would like to grab a beer or have some dinner in the pub.
Slàinte mhath! (Cheers! To your health!)
