And how are things in Singapore?
Apart from booking a flight and a hostel, I was quite unprepared when I left for Singapore to do part of my master in Architecture, Building and Planning. I met five fellow ‘homeless’ students at the introductory lecture, and after two hectic weeks we found an apartment together.
As of now, I’ve been studying for almost three months at the National University of Singapore, “#1 in Asia”, and I can summarize my life here as: a lot of studying, as the expectations are high and the grading system is relative leading to great competition.
But it’s also lots of fun, because with five flatmates there is always something happening. It is really easy and cheap to travel from Singapore to surrounding countries. Together with friends I’ve been to Cambodia for a week (see picture) and there are already travel plans for Borneo and Myanmar.
Adapting to life in Singapore proved to be easy. It is very western and everyone speaks English, or the local variety Singlish. Apart from this, Singapore is quite monotonous as the strict policies of the government causes everything to run smoothly, but prevents any ‘exciting’ events.
Also, Singaporeans don’t cook, the culture here is that you eat at Hawker Centres; a kind of market with food stalls. They have a large variety in Asian cuisines and the food here in Singapore is truly one of the highlights.
I can recommend everyone to go on exchange. It is an extremely cool, inspirational and special experience, as you grow really intense friendships, and get to know yourself in a completely different way. My advice: say yes to everything, even though it might be at the expense of your studies, it completely makes up for pulling an all-nighter.
