And how are things in Aveiro?
At the end of August I left the Netherlands, for a 3 months internship in Aveiro, Portugal. I am working at the Universidade de Aveiro, more specifically at the CAMBADA Robotic Soccer Team. Indeed, this university has, just like do we in Eindhoven, a team of 5 robots playing soccer against 5 robots from another team. Usually, these two teams (Tech United and CAMBADA) meet each other twice a year in competition, so this sounds like helping the opponent, don't you think? Luckily, because of the open (research) character of the RoboCup, I will still be allowed to come back to Eindhoven (right?).
The CAMBADA team has a full-sized robotic soccer field at its disposal, which covers more than half of the laboratory I work in. The soccer field is separated from the office-area by a brand-new net, meant to prevent balls hitting people working behind their computer. This net was installed just after I learned how to control the robots using a play station-controller, a coincidence?
Aveiro is also called the Venice of Portugal, this because of the canal running through the center of the city. This canal is the main touristic attraction, every day numerous tourists cruise these canals in small boats called Moliceiros. Aside from the canal Aveiro is also known for its ovos moles (a sweet made of eggs and a lot of sugar), the beach of Costa Nova and Barra, and its modern university. Aveiro is located just south of Porto, making it the perfect base to embark from in the weekends, for trips to Porto, Coimbra, Peniche, Braga, Lisbon and many, many more.
With my internship nearing its end, my list of places to visit is growing instead of shrinking, this is because of the enthusiasm of the Portuguese for their beautiful country.
