First English-language student in University Council
In the elections for the University Council, Groep-één reconquered the seat which it lost last year to the Eindhoven Student Council (ESR). This takes them to a total of six seats as against three for ESR. For the first time there is an English-language student sitting in the University Council: Danyal Haider, a Bachelor student of Electrical Engineering. He belongs to the party of Groep-één.
With a distinct dominance of 2419 votes versus 1052 votes for ESR, the loss of a seat last year was undone again.
In a first reaction the Pakistani Haider says he is thrilled with his election and he wants to stand up in particular for the international community. He does not expect that his accession to the Council will lead directly to the introduction of English as the working language in the meetings. Still, certain documents will be translated for him and he is going to work on becoming more proficient in Dutch rapidly now.
On Tuesday and Wednesday elections were also held for the members of the Staff party PUR. It had ten candidates available for nine seats. In this party there was a considerable number of replacements: four new members will occupy their seats at the next meeting. For this election, votes were cast by 37 percent of the employees.
