Present students with a few swimming pools and some water fun accessories, and they're ready to go. By 1.45 p.m. many were already doused by friends or strangers, while Executive Board member Jo van Ham hadn't even started his speech yet. "Did you have fun this week?" he asked. And: "Did you make new friends?" He concluded with the words: "Sing a loud 'Io vivat' and then splash!"
Ruben Pranger (future student of Computer Science) didn't care for Van Ham's talk. "I couldn't hear a word he said. Let's say I was distracted." But Splash is worth repeating, as far as he's concerned. His daddy Luuk Meeuwis compares Splash to last year's closing event, the cantus. "At least now we're throwing stuff with a purpose. Last year we chucked the non-alcoholic beer because it was just too gross to drink! They should hold on to this closing event."
Linde Hesse, mommy of group BMT 17 thinks it's "fun for a bit", but she's bummed there's no one left to soak. "Everyone is completely wet already. The cantus was fun for longer, at least it was easier to stay awake."
CIC handed out forty thousand water balloons: four hundred water balloon pumps with one hundred balloons each. And another six hundred spunge balls. Of course, some walk around with buckets, shopping bags, or other plastic containers. Whoever doesn't feel like a water fight is free to dance in a foam bath.
"Good times, but that's all, really", says Guy Dubois. He is a tuna and started 'Io vivat' on stage. He managed to keep away from most of the water when the audience started throwing water balloons. Happy for him 'Io vivat' is a short song.
