Intro | Fun by land, air... and in the gutter
Once upon a time, there was a brewing company located way on top of a mountain. It wanted to transport its beer down to the lakeside. Thankfully, several future mechanical engineers were present, too. During the Intro week, they created ships from wood, paper, and duct tape. Then on a sunny Thursday morning, they all carried their vessels up the mountain, loaded each with a crate of beer and let them slide down into the lake. All vessels made it to the other side of the lake smoothly.
Oh wait: they didn’t. Even the first step of reaching the lake – a swimming pool at De Goot (the gutter) at Gemini filled up by the fire department – proved too tough for a number of constructions. Top-heavy, they toppled over onto the concrete even before they reached the water. One sidecar construction was so unbalanced it fell of the cart, which miraculously resulted in the crate of beer actually making it into the water. Other boats capsized upon hitting the water.
Good thing there were some constructions that not only floated but even traveled far enough to set off the confetti cannon some four meters into the pool. One brave little boat (number 6) even reached the other side… Almost. It fell twenty centimeters short. Since the same group scored well on design and solidity, their travel distance won them first prize: a gift basket (including a powerbank) sponsored by Damen Shipyards, the company that was involved with helping the teams build their vessels on Monday as well.
