Trade up! | Part 1: The Rector's pretty Tintin car
“Copycats are cool cats”, Kyle MacDonald writes in his blog. In July 2005, the Canadian offered to swap his red paperclip, and within a year he had swapped himself a house. Nope, we’re definitely not the first to start this game. And we’re not looking to acquire a house, either. We’re just really looking forward to the swaptastic journey through TU/e that lies ahead, and who we’ll meet along the way. Keep track of our barter here and don’t hesitate to e-mail us if you see an item you love, and you’re willing to exchange it for something ever better.
A pennant of soccer team Feyenoord Rotterdam - it crossed his mind for a second. “But there’s nobody in Eindhoven who’d want it”, Hans van Duijn realized in time. Still, the TU/e Rector wants to “contribute something more substantial than the boring old pen or paperclip”, as he is quite charmed by both our new Cursor item as well as the fact he’s been asked to get the show on the road.
He carefully places a tiny green car on the table, and looks up at the Cursor correspondent in anticipation. It is “with a heavy heart” that he lets go of the classic car in which Thomson and Thompson are seated. “I’m a huge fan of Tintin”, he admits. The green car is part of a series, each item of which features in one of the many Tintin issues of Belgian author and illustrator Hergé. His son once gave him the tiny classic as a present, and it has brightened Van Duijn’s study for at least fifteen years.
The Rector has participated in a ‘swap-athon’ before. Students once came to his door with a magazine and managed to swap it for a bag that had belonged to Van Duijn’s wife up until then. A pretty great swap for the student, but upon closing the front door the Van Duijns realized they were treated to an issue of The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingsom. Clearly, it’s not his genre.
He sure hopes Cursor manages to strike a better deal swapping his beloved little green car. As far as he knows it’s not collector’s item, but it should be worth at least ten euros. A quick picture with Thomson and Thompson, but then it’s time for them to leave for Cursor HQ.
