Cursor goes Matrix
By the end of this week, Cursor will be moving to Matrix. Along with the entire Communications Expertise Center (CEC), the editorial staff will be leaving the Laplace building to make room for the Department of Industrial Design. The moves are necessary because of the renovation of Hoofdgebouw, which has to be cleared entirely.
The pond and the square in front of MetaForum will be the new view of the Cursor staff, who will then be residing on the second floor of Matrix. The editorial team will be sharing a single large room with the rest of CEC, and in two weeks´ time, ICT Services will be the new neighbors. Several external parties will also be housed in Matrix, but all lecture rooms in the building will remain educational facilities.
With CIC and ICT Services leaving, the Laplace building can be readied for Industrial Design. With eight hundred people, it’s the largest batch that has to relocate this fall. The department will move into its new quarters in late December, followed in January by Safety & Security and the Central Reporting Station.
In and between other buildings, people are on the move. Part of the Education and Student Service Center that’s currently housed in Hoofdgebouw will be moving to MetaForum at the end of October. And on the fourth floor of MetaForum, the Department of Mathematics & Computer Science (W&I) has to make way for the Executive Board and part of General Affairs (among others), both of which are now residing in Hoofdgebouw.
All in all, some two-thirds of campus folk is involved in the slide puzzle that’s part of Project 3. Both the planning of the move and the budget are tight, “but we hope to have emptied the Hoofdgebouw by January 1”, says project leader Caroline Koot of DH.
The start of the Hoofdgebouw remediation is planned for early 2015. Because of asbestos, the entire building will be stripped down to the skeleton frame (apart from the substructure that was renovated in 1998). Demolition should be finalized some time in 2016, and renovation works can go ahead after that. The new residents (including the Executive Board, all supporting services, and two departments) are expected to be able to move into the all new building in the fall of 2018.
From next week, CEC and the Cursor editorial staff can be found in Matrix 1.90. Because of the move and arranging our new home, Cursor will be working with limited capacity and may not be reachable on Thursday, September 18 and Friday, September 19.
