Dedication Sagrada attended by many
The official opening of the Sagrada Familia in Ice, the basilica made of ice by Built Environment students in the Finnish town of Juuka over the past month, was attended by some 1,400 people last Saturday. Opera singer Laurien Schreuder performed as an ‘ice angel’, and the building was dedicated by bishops of the Finnish orthodox and Lutheran churches. On Thursday, the builders will receive a warm welcome at TU/e.

Small tower ice cathedral under construction, large tower delayed
Just like last year, the Finnish weather seems to become the most exciting factor for the TU/e team working on the construction of an enormous basilica of ice. With temperatures between -15 and -25 it’s currently cold in Juuka, but higher temperatures are afoot (which is bad for the builders). Right now, the students are working round the clock to construct as much of the ice cathedral as possible before the warmer weather hits.

Preparations Sagrada Familia ice sculpture in full swing
Fifteen students of Built Environment are preparing for the Sagrada Familia ice sculpture a TU/e delegation wants to build in the Finnish town of Juuka this winter. Once again, they’ll be working with pyrkete – the mixture of ice and sawdust that was also used for the largest ice dome in the world last January. The location is fixed, there’s a design, and several sponsors have been found already.

Students finish world's largest ice dome
Friday night, the construction workers popped champagne to celebrate their successful project: building the world's largest ice dome. The construction diameter is thirty meters and the dome measures ten meters in height. The balloon on which the construction rested was popped Friday, and much to the team's delight their creation stood on its own - as was expected. The dome's official opening in Juuka, Finland was on Saturday.

TU/e students want to build largest ice dome ever
Two graduate students at Built Environment have decided they want to build the largest-ever dome made of ice. Jorrit Hijl and Roel Pluijmen will leave for Finland in late December to start working on a dome with a thirty-meter diameter at the base, helped by volunteers. They’ll be using ice that’s been reinforced with wood fiber.
