Extra teachers for five departments
In 2014 and 2015, the Departments of Biomedical Engineering (BMT), Mathematics & Computer Science (W&I), Mechanical Engineering (W), Applied Physics (TN), and Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences (IE&IS) will have the opportunity to hire 25.6 fte worth of new teaching staff. Last week, the Executive Board decided in favor of the plan, which is meant to accommodate the expected student growth.
BMT can appoint 7 fte for four months in 2014 and throughout 2015, W&I has been allotted 3 fte for that same period. W will have 4.6 fte at its disposal, and TN will have to make do with 2 fte. IE&IS will receive money for 9 fte, but only for the last four months of 2014. For 2015, says board member Jo van Ham, between 1.5 and 1.9 million euros will be made available for the latter department.
"We want to help departments bridge that period", Van Ham explains. "The government will pay for every student, but we won't see any of that money until 2016. We've assessed all departments, and decided whether or not they should be able to make it until then. At some departments growth may not be massive, but at W&I for example Calculus is an important course."
Each department can opt for temporary or indefinite contracts, and it's up to them to decide what exact position they want filled, too. Van Ham: "We'll compensate them financially, but they'll have to decide how they want the money distributed. We'd prefer for departments to hire assistant professors. After all, the money is supposed to be used for hiring new teaching staff."
The Executive Board will also implement other measures to deal with the expected growth: evening lectures are likely to be introduced, and audiovisual equipment will be improved.
