TU/e rises 24 places in UI GreenMetric world sustainability ranking
TU/e has risen 24 places in the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking for sustainability and environment-friendly university management worldwide. In compiling this ranking, Universitas Indonesia (UI) surveyed more than 300 universities in 49 countries. Eindhoven took 36th place with a score of 6,305 points. Number one was the University of Nottingham with 7,521 points. Eindhoven scored highest out of the four participating universities in the Netherlands.
The GreenMetric Ranking was started in 2010. The organizers aim to highlight universities that actively reduce their CO2 emissions and help to fight climate change. Factors taken into account in drawing up the list include the size of the university, the location and the amount of green cover on the campus. The ranking covers six main categories, each with its own weighting factor: setting and infrastructure (15%), energy and climate change (21%), waste management (18%), water usage (10%), transportation (18%) and education (18%).
The rise of TU/e in the ranking results from the integrated sustainability policy followed by the university in recent years. For example the campus has been made more compact thanks to the Campus 2020 accommodation plan. New buildings such as MetaForum and Flux meet high sustainability standards. And the Green Walkway, a traffic-free ‘green’ central area, offers ample freedom of movement for pedestrians and cyclists. The number of parking spaces has also been reduced. In addition, TU/e includes attention for sustainability issues in its education and research programs, and this was one of the factors contributing to the higher place in the ranking.
