Emiel Hensen receives Vici grant for carrier material catalysis

Prof.dr.ir. Emiel Hensen is to receive a 1.5-million-euro Vici Grant from research financer NWO. Hensen is Professor of Molecular catalysis at the Department of Chemical Engineering, and he will be researching reactions occurring in the area between catalyst nanoparticles and the carrier material they’re attached to.

Hensen will be focusing on a number of uses, including separating water into hydrogen and oxygen using sunlight. This process is one of the primary candidates for becoming the world’s number-one sustainable source of energy. The Vici grant is the largest grant awarded by the NWO Innovation Research Incentives Scheme. It’s meant for excellent and authoritative researchers.

Storing energy in hydrogen twenty times more effective

Catalysts accelerate chemical reactions, but the widely used metal platinum is scarce and expensive. Researchers at TU/e, together with Chinese, Singaporean and Japanese researchers, have now developed an alternative with a 20x higher activity: a catalyst with hollow nanocages of an alloy of nickel and platinum. TU/e researcher Emiel Hensen wants to use this new catalyst to develop a refrigerator-size electrolyzer of about 10 megawatts in the future. The results are published today in the journal Science.

New catalyst opens door to CO2 capture

In the conversion of coal to liquid fuels quite a lot of CO2 is emitted. TU/e researchers led by Emiel Hensen have together with colleagues from China developed iron-based catalysts that substantially reduce operating costs and open the door to capturing the large amounts of CO2 that are generated by the conversion process. Their results are published in the journal Science Advances.

Emiel Hensen new dean Chemical Engineering

On 1 October, when Emiel Hensen becomes dean of the Chemical Engineering department (ST) of Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), a former student will be taking over the reins. Hensen (1971) is professor of Inorganic Chemistry and Catalysis, and studies new catalysts for a more sustainable chemical industry and society. Hensen succeeds Jaap Schouten following the latter’s appointment as chairman of the new NWO domain Applied and Engineering Sciences.

Money for research projects with India

Two of three new projects concerning functional materials that are financed by NWO in collaboration with the Indian government have been granted to TU/e. The two studies involve catalysts, and nanoporous membranes. With the NWO contribution, just under half a million euro, both projects can hire two doctoral candidates.

1.5 million for movement expert Speckmann

TU/e professor of Algorithms and Visualization prof.dr. Bettina Speckmann has been awarded a Vici Grant worth 1.5 million euros. She’s one of 32 leading scientists to receive the Now grant. Speckmann will be using the grant for the development of geometric algorithms that can visualize patterns in complex data, such as the displacement of riverbeds and the evolution of ideas in old books.
